Jibrin explains why he shunned Ethics Committee hearing

The former Chairman of the  House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin has given reason for his absence   at a hearing on his alleged breach of House Rules by the Committee on Ethics and Privileges. Jibrin told newsmen on Tuesday that he shunned the panel because the Chairman, Nicholas Ossai had shown bias in words and action.

Edo poll: Card readers fail in some wards

Some card readers deployed for today’s governorship election in Edo state have failed to function at polling units in Ipkeshi, near Auchi. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the device could not function in Ward 11 and 12 at Okhueromoh Primary School, Ipkeshi, when INEC officials there attempted to accredit voters for the poll. Some of the voters, Mr Agbada Jerry and Charles Monday, decried the development and said that it would delay the voting process.

The People’s Democratic Party, PDP, has raise an alarm over alleged planned by the All Progressives Congress, APC, to manipulate the ongoing Edo governorship election. Prince Dayo Adeyeye, PDP National Publicity Secretary, in a statement said “Having received results from our agents at approximately 1800 of the 2627 polling units spread across the 192 Wards in the 18 Local Government Areas of Edo State, we can confirm that our party has attained a near unassailable lead in the Edo State gubernatorial election.

AFDB to Loan Nigeria $4.1bn

The African Development Bank (AfDB) is working on giving Nigeria loan facilities of $4.1bn between now and next year for critical sectors of the economy. The loan which is in different categories include $1bn at a concessionary interest rate of 1.2 per cent for Nigeria to address the 2016 budget deficit and aid her economic recovery. The AfDB President, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, revealed this after a meeting with the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, and other members of the Economic Management Team (EMT) in Abuja. According to the AfDB president, the package includes; $1bn in budget support, $300m to create jobs for 185,000 youths, $250m towards infrastructure development in the North-East, $1m grant to deal with challenges of Internally Displaced Persons, $300m for infrastructure development around Abuja, and $200m for the Transmission Company of Nigeria to improve its facilities, among others.

Female Boko Haram victims in Nigerian camps forced to sell sex as food runs out

Tired of watching her five children go hungry in a camp for people fleeing Boko Haram in northeastern Nigeria, Amina Ali Pulka decided to befriend a young man who worked in the kitchen. Desperate due to the lack of aid distributed at the Bakassi camp in the city of Maiduguri, the 30-year-old had sex with the man in exchange for extra food to give to her children. "I did it because I had nobody to feed me or clothe me," Pulka told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by phone, adding that the man, who like her had been uprooted by Boko Haram violence, also gave her money which she used to buy soap and other items. Pulka is one of many women in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in northeast Nigeria who are selling sex in exchange for food, soap, and money, said medical charity International Medical Corps (IMC) and Nigerian research group NOI Polls. Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, has berated the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP candidate in the ongoing governorship election in the state, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, for claiming to be a pastor. Addressing reporters, the Governor described Ize-Iyamu, who is his former campaign director, as a “pathological liar”, who “lies effortlessly”. Oshiomhole stressed that the PDP flag bearer is not worthy of being addressed as a pastor for alleging that some All Progressives Congress, APC, governors, including Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos and Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna, were in the state to perfect ways of rigging the governorship election.
