Killer of South African anti-apartheid hero to be freed on parole

The convicted killer of  South African  anti-apartheid leader  Chris Hani  will be freed on parole in two weeks after more than 20 years in prison, a  Pretoria  court ruled on Thursday. Janusz Walus  was serving a life sentence for the 1993 murder of Hani, a charismatic activist and politician who was both a senior member of the  African National Congress  (ANC) and the head of the South African Communist Party (SACP) when he was gunned down.

Presidential candidate calls global currency devaluations 'dangerous' for US

Republican  presidential candidate  Donald Trump  on Thursday blasted currency devaluations around the world for hurting the U.S. economy and costing  American  jobs, and defended his calls for a tougher U.S. stance on trade. Asked about the  European Central Bank 's decision on Thursday to cut interest rates, Trump told CNBC that such devaluations were driving manufacturing and other jobs outside of the  United States .

Lagos Governor signs N662.588bn appropriation bill into law

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode  of Lagos State on Monday assented to the 2016 Budget, saying it will be primarily driven by Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). Ambode said this while signing into law the 2016 Appropriation Bill at the Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja. It was presented to him by Mr Rotimi Olowo, Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Economic Planning and Budget. The  Spotlight Media Centre  recalls that Ambode had presented the budget of N662.588 billion to the Assembly for consideration on Dec. 17.

LIRS: Agency introduces new tax forms, goes tough on tax evaders

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) seems to be making efforts to improve the ease with which business is conducted in Lagos State. The government agency announced different initiatives with the aim to achieve efficient tax administration in the Lagos. Mr. Olufolarin Ogunsanwo,  The Executive Chairman of LIRS, shared this information Tuesday March 8 at a press conference held at Lagos Press Centre, Ikeja. With him was the House Committee Chairman on Finance, Lagos State House of Assembly, Honorable  Oluyinka Ogundimu , Lagos State Commissioners for Finance, Mr.  Mustapha Akinkunmi , Information and Strategy, Mr.  Steve Ayorinde  and the Attorney General of the Lagos State, Mr.  Adeniji Kazeem .

FG plans to utilise construction sector

Babatunde Raji Fashola , Minister for Power, Works and Housing during a stakeholder workshop with the Quantity Surveyors Registration Board of Nigeria in Abuja stated that the construction industry contributes greatly to the growth of the economy and the federal government will be exploring the industry.

Current economy not favourable to manufacturers---- Herbert Wigwe

Herbert Wigwe , Managing Director  Access Bank Plc  during the  Nigerian Economic Summit  in Lagos on Monday, February 8, 2016 highlighted that due the scarcity of forex, manufacturers are unable to but raw materials. Wigwe further added that though manufacturers are facing hard time but he believes the way out is for Nigeria to support the supply side of forex and liberalise the market.

Polio:Rotary International awards Buhari for his support in eradicating disease

Noting that the last reported case of Polio was July 24, 2014, Muhammadu Buhari  has received a Polio Eradication Champion Awards from the Rotary International. Though Nigeria has not been declared Polio free, but World Health Organisation WHO has removed Nigeria from its list of Polio-endemic countries, being that no new case of the disease has been recorded for almost 2 years.
